The latest article I have is my article about Mandela Coop grocery store where I interview two worker-owners of the store. It's a great article about a community creating a healthy grocery store for the people living there.
I have written two articles about SEIU-UHW concerning their contractual fight with Kaiser, the hospital they work for. The concerns were the strenuous work, low pay, and the need for Kaiser to hire more workers. Kaiser has agreed to the contract that will hopefully solve those concerns the workers have.
Thoughts of Media
Local Media obsession undermining leftists reforms continue to be the horn they toot in 2023 and beyond. Like George Floyd was a rallying cry for the local media to figure out ways of keeping their audience in the dark about prison reform and supporting poor people. Local News in the bay area have a collective fight against Pamela Price is very sickening but also not surprising considering local news recent massive layoffs. The industry is slowly dying because the corporations that own the local news media are killing them. It is because for many white journalists they figure the overlords of these corporations will get some sense and hire them back to tell anti-poor and anti-black like in the old days. They won’t. These corporations are cheap and see that their audience is down massively so its sink or swim time. So the audience they do have is obsessed with crime, even if they don’t see it with their own eyes. The other reason why the media is obsessed with crime is that many of these tech companies are firing people and making products that nobody is paying attention to. How many kids woke up during Christmas and Kwanzaa getting a virtual reality handset? When the tech companies are not making any noise, then the local media will use white fear to make people watch.
The local media has always been a place to shun the poor and the black and brown communities. Kansas City Star stated that they apologize for posting for years racist and offensive articles about black people. When your audience is dying, what brings them together is crime articles so when your white audience goes to a job they don’t like they can say “At least I am not a criminal.” Local news pushes the narrative that more cops are needed when budgets for police in cities are already at record highs while social services get gutted.
Local news and national right wing media connect with each other. Show that black kid beating up on an Asian person on local news and then on national right wing media like see, “This is why you shouldn’t defund the police. This is why we have guns in the hands of white people. Because it is a zombie apocalypse.” That attitude is given to citizens who think they say pretty toxic stuff to their politicians because Batman has not saved us yet. But when poverty programs have been undermined for anti-competitive capitalism, this is the result. The billionaires and the millionaires are allowed to exploit the poor while working for 80 hours just to survive.
Local media needs to have healthy conversations about poverty in this city. Blaming poverty for everything is not right nor helps anybody. We want decent housing and food fit for human beings as stated by the late great Huey Newton.
Books that you need to understand the conversation about prison reform and defunding police initiatives.
Music
I am listening to that new BG/ Gucci Mane. Happy to see BG out of jail. Big Hit dropped yall should check out.
I was thinking about how there is little appreciation for early 2000 and late 2000 hip hop outside of hyphy and Dipset. Soulja Boy brought something to the table. Jurassic 5 did too. DJ Unk. Huey (RIP).
I am happy can appreciate Victoria Monet On My MaMa which used the lyrics from the era I describe Chalie Boy I look Good
